  • What effect does blades have on grass cuttings?
    • Blade quality and sharpness has a lot do due with the quality of the cut. Blades that are not sharpened properly will simply tear the grass instead of providing a clean cut through the blades of grass.

  • When do I need to de-thatch my lawn?
    • Thatch is defined as a layer of dead plant stems, leaves, and roots that form between the blades of the grass and the soil surface. Tall Fescue grass clippings are not components of thatch. Some thatch is beneficial to lawns. However a thatch thickness in excess of 1/2" can prevent essential nutrients from reaching the roots.  De-thatching along with aerating should be done when the grass is actively growing.  The best time to do this is early September to early November.

  • How much water is needed on my lawn?
    • 1" of water per week when the lawn is actively growing is needed for proper growth. If mother nature does not provide this it is necessary to water you yard. In mature lawns it is best to get the 1" of water in two separate days to allow water to soak deep into the roots. In lawns that have just been seeded, it is better to water every day or every other day for shorter periods to get the same 1" of water. This keeps the seeds moist for better germination.

  • When is the best time to water my lawn?
    • Early morning between the hours of 5am and 7am is the best time to water your lawn. Watering in mid-day only allows the water to evaporate before reaching the roots. Watering late at night causes water to sit on the lawn for a long time increasing the risk of fungus forming.

  • What is the proper height to mow my lawn?
    • Grass height depends on the type of grass. Mowing too short weakens the grass and allows weeds to form. When mowing you should never take off more then 1/3 of the total blade height. Here are some cutting heights for common grasses in this area:
      • Bermudagrass: .075" to 1.5"
      • Zoysiagrass: .075" to 1.5"
      • Kentucky Bluegrass: 1.5: to 2.5"
      • Tall Fescue:  2.0" to 3.5"

  • Should I bag my grass clippings after mowing my yard?
    • No, clippings left on grass are a source of nitrogen and other nutrients. Think of it as putting the nutrients back into the soil instead of taking them away. You should bag your yard however if the grass is too long and the clippings will clump and mat.

  • Do we really need an irrigation system?
    • When an irrigation system is properly set up it will help ensure that you consistently receive the right amount of water on your lawn.  You lawn needs approximately 1”-2” of rain a week and because Mother Nature can work in funny ways, you cannot always be guaranteed that your lawn will receive the proper amount of water.
  • Will having an irrigation system save me time?
    • YES- When your system is properly set up it will save you from having to drag out garden hoses and sprinklers.  You will no longer have to stop doing other things to water your lawn.  An irrigation system will even come on and properly water your lawn while you are on vacation.
  • How long does an irrigation system last?
    • A well-designed and properly installed irrigation system should not require any major service or repair for many years.  A good piping system will last for 20 years or more.  The sprinkler heads and automatic timer will operate for 10 to 15 years on average.
  • Can an irrigation system really save me money and conserve water?
    • YES – Over a period of time you will save money on your water bill by not wasting water when you water by hand.  An irrigation system will water your lawn where it is needed the most.  It will not waste water on the road, driveway or other areas that do not need to be watered.
  • How difficult is an irrigation system to use?
    • An irrigation system is easy to use.  A Perfect Cut Landscaping and Irrigation professional will properly set up your controller and explain how to use it once the system is installed.  Also remember that we are only a phone call away and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

  • What if another contractor’s price is lower that Perfect Cut Landscaping and Irrigations price?
    • Watch out for those people that may take “short cuts”  and may cause you a big headache in the future.  Some common “short cuts” can include the following:
      • Not installing a backflow preventer (required by law if you tap into a city drinking system)
      • Not having enough water pressure per zone to provide good coverage or installing the sprinkler heads too far apart.
      • Mixing and matching different brands
      • Not providing enough protection for electrical components causing problems later.
      • Not packing, seeding, and placing straw over the ditches.  Many companies do not include replanting grass once the ditches are covered.
